Back to the time of the Three Kingdoms (AD 220–280), there was a tripartite division between the states of Wei, Shu, and Wu. To further distinguish the three states from others during the same period, historians have added a relevant Chinese character to their names: Wei is also known as Cao Wei, Shu is also known as Shu Han, and Wu is also known as Dong (or Eastern) Wu. Each state was ultimately headed not by a king, but by an emperor who claimed to be the legitimate successor to the Han dynasty.
