Lesson 21 Mad or not是不是瘋了
Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad. I live near an airport and passing planes can be heard night and day. The airport was built years ago, but for some reason it could not be used then. Last year, however, it came into use. Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise. I am one of the few people left. Sometimes I think this house will be knocked down by a passing plane. I have been offered a large sum of money to go away, but I am determined to stay here. Everybody says I must be mad and they are probably right.

飛機(jī)正在逐漸把我逼瘋。我住在一個(gè)機(jī)場(chǎng)附近，過(guò)往飛機(jī)日夜不絕于耳。機(jī)場(chǎng)是許多年前建的，但由于某種原因當(dāng)時(shí)未能啟用。然而去年機(jī)場(chǎng)開(kāi)始使用了。有100多人肯定是被噪音逼得已經(jīng)棄家遠(yuǎn)去，我是少數(shù)留下來(lái)的人中的一個(gè)。有時(shí)我覺(jué)得這房子就要被一架飛過(guò)的飛機(jī)撞倒。他們?cè)蛭姨峁┮淮蠊P錢(qián)讓我搬走，但我決定留在這兒。大家都說(shuō)我肯定是瘋了，也許他們說(shuō)的是對(duì)的.。

Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise.
“must have 過(guò)去分詞”表示對(duì)過(guò)去發(fā)生的事情或狀態(tài)進(jìn)行推測(cè)，語(yǔ)氣比較堅(jiān)定，通常只用于肯定句。如：
It must have rained last night, for the ground is wet.
You must have been mad to speak to the servant.
情態(tài)動(dòng)詞表示猜測(cè)的情況：
表示對(duì)過(guò)去的推測(cè)：主要用may ,can, could, must have done來(lái)表示。
She may have sent a letter to her mother, for her mother arrived here this morning.
It must have rained last night, for the ground was quilt wet.
He must have finished his homework, you ask him for help.
“We went to the Great Wall.”----- “That must have been nice.”
如果對(duì)現(xiàn)在的情況表示猜測(cè)，則用may, must, can 動(dòng)詞原形。
Mary must have some problem: she keeps crying.
There’s the bell. It must be Tom.
She may be at home.
Peter might phone, if he does ,could you ask him to ring later?
Must 表示推測(cè)，一般用于肯定句，在疑問(wèn)句或否定句中，用can和can’t
It can’be Mary. She is on sick leave.
Tom can’t have finished his composition. He is still working on it.
