世界大學(xué)生運動會是國際大學(xué)生體育聯(lián)合會主辦的世界性綜合運動會，它由三大賽事組成，即“世界大學(xué)生夏季運動會”、“世界大學(xué)生冬季運動會”和“世界大學(xué)生體育錦標賽”。 上世紀20年代初，當(dāng)時的國際大學(xué)生組織就已開始計劃舉辦世界大學(xué)生運動會。1923年5月，在巴黎召開了世界大學(xué)生體育代表大會，會議決 定次年舉行第一屆國際大學(xué)生運動會。1924年，首屆國際大學(xué)生運動會(International Universities' Games)在華沙舉行，設(shè)田徑、游泳和擊劍3個比賽項目。此后，運動會不定期舉辦，至1939年共舉辦了8屆。后因第二次世界大戰(zhàn)運動會被-迫中 斷，1947年恢復(fù)舉行。但從1951年起因國際形勢的變化，分-裂成東西方兩個運動會，西方的名為"國際學(xué)生體育運動會"，東方的叫"青年學(xué)生運動會" 或"青年友好運動會"。兩個陣營各自組織和舉辦自己的`大學(xué)生運動會。
